Germany closes 'Dutch' stem cell clinic

The German authorities have closed down a controversial stem cell clinic operated by Dutch pharmacologist Kees Kleinbloesem. The XCell-Center became the subject of controversy when a Rumanian baby which had stem cells injected into his brain died last year.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the doctor who carried out the operation. Another patient – a ten-year-old boy from Azerbaijan - developed serious complications after undergoing the same treatment. The child was left more seriously disabled than before.

The XCell-Center, which has offices in Cologne and Düsseldorf, was an initiative of Mr Kleinbloesem. The German newspaper Wirtschafts Woche says the clinic’s shareholders sacked the Dutch pharmacologist at the end of April.
