Britain’s
prime minister David Cameron is to deliver a major speech on Europe in the
Netherlands on January 18, his press office has confirmed.
British
media reported at the weekend Cameron was planning to make the speech in the
Netherlands, and that he had the support of Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte.
But Dutch
officials said at the time they had no knowledge of the speech or its location.
Meeting
Nos
television reported on Monday evening that Rutte will not attend the speech but
that the two leaders will meet afterwards.
Cameron's speech is expected to outline his position on Europe, plans to renegotiate
Britain's membership treaty and calls for a referendum.
It is not
clear why he has decided to give the speech in the Netherlands.
