Britain's 'atheist church' set to go global

LONDON — Echoing with joyful song and with a congregation bent on leading better lives, this London church is like any other -- except there's no mention of God.

Britain's atheist church is barely three months old but it already has more "worshippers" than can fit into its services, while more than 200 non-believers worldwide have contacted organisers to ask how they can set up their own branch.

Officially named The Sunday Assembly, the church was the brainchild of Pippa Evans and Sanderson Jones, two comedians who suspected there might be an appetite for atheist gatherings that borrowed a few aspects of religious worship.

Held in an airy, ramshackle former church in north London, their quirky monthly meetings combine music, speeches and moral pondering with large doses of humour.

"There's so much about Church that has nothing to do with God -- it's about meeting people, it's about thinking about improving your life," said Jones, a gregarious 32-year-old with a bushy beard and a laugh like a thunderclap.

The Sunday Assembly's central tenets are to "help often, live better and wonder more" -- themes that would not be out of keeping with the teachings of any major world religion.

At last Sunday's service, which had a volunteering theme, songs included "Help" by the Beatles and "Holding Out For A Hero" by Bonnie Tyler.

The "sermon" was given by the founder of an education charity, while in a section called Pippa Is Trying Her Best, Evans had the congregation in stitches as she reported on her attempts at voluntary work.

The service ended with big cheers and -- this is Britain, after all -- shouts of "Who would like a cup of tea?"

Like many Western countries, Britain is becoming an increasingly faithless nation.

While a majority still consider themselves Christians, census data revealed in December that their numbers plummeted from 72 percent in 2001 to 59 percent in 2011.

The proportion of Britons with no religion, meanwhile, shot up from 15 percent to 25 percent over the same period.

But the Sunday Assembly's success -- 400 Londoners packed into last week's two services, while 60 had to be turned away at the door -- suggests many urban atheists crave the sense of community that comes with joining a church.

"You can spend all day in London not talking to anyone," said Evans. "I think people really want somewhere they can go and meet other people, which doesn't involve drinking and which you don't have to pay to get into."

It's an idea that is catching the attention of atheists further field.

Jones reels off the locations of would-be atheist "vicars" who have asked to set up new branches.

"Colombia, Bali, Mexico, Houston, Silicon Valley, Philadelphia, Ohio, Calgary, all across Britain, The Hague, Vienna... It's so ludicrously exciting that my head occasionally -- literally -- spins round."

The pair cheerfully admit that they have "ripped off" many elements of their services from the Christian Church. "You're asking people to do new things, so it makes sense for it to be familiar," said Jones.

Religious people have been broadly supportive of the aims of the atheist church. "The only thing is, they've said they'll have to think about what to do if it gets bigger," Evans laughed.

"Actually, the biggest aggression towards us has probably been from atheists saying that we're ruining atheism and not not believing in God properly. So that's quite funny."

The assembly met the approval of local vicar Dave Tomlinson, who came from his church two miles away to see what his new rivals were up to.

"Being here, I felt there was as much of what I call 'God' as there was in my own church this morning," he said. "Everything we've said here would be completely at home in my church. I hope it grows and sustains."

The second Sunday Assembly launches in the Scottish city of Glasgow at the end of March, while Evans will open an Australian branch in April.

She and Jones say they don't want to exert too much control over any new assemblies -- but they will keep a watchful eye over them.

"We only need one child sacrifice at a Sunday Assembly to spoil it for everyone," Jones joked.

As for how far the idea could eventually spread, the pair are in the dark.

"Who knows?" said Evans. "We have no idea. We're just enjoying finding out what it is."

VATICAN CITY — An excommunicated female priest decked out in her liturgical robes was detained by Italian police for demonstrating at the Vatican on Thursday, where she called on the Catholic Church to rethink its policy on ordaining women.

Unfurling a red and white banner reading "Women Priests are Here", Janice Sevre-Duszynska said she wanted to draw attention to the lack of a voice for women as cardinals gather at the Vatican to choose former pope Benedict XVI's successor.

"As the cardinals meet for their conclave to elect the new pope, women are being ordained around the world!" said Sevre-Duszynska, a member of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests, decked out in an ivory, handmade alb and green stole.

"There are already 150 female priests in the world. The people are ready for change," she said in a quick interview with AFP in front of St. Peter's Basilica, before being taken away in a police car.

Officers said they were questioning her "right to wear those vestments".

Sevre-Duszynska, an American who lives in Kentucky, was ordained by a female bishop and has been leading mass for four years -- though she and all other female priests have been excommunicated by the Vatican.

"The huge decision as to who will lead the world's Catholics is being made among men alone, which is a mockery. Not hearing the opinions of half of the world is like a slap in the face," she said.

"Young people are leaving the Church in droves because they refuse to accept women priests. We ask our brother priests to publicly speak out for women priests," she added.

Sevre-Duszynska said she didn't have much hope that this conclave would change much for women, but urged supporters to make their voices heard in a bid to influence policy.

"For a new pope who opens the way to the ordination of female priests, the Holy Spirit would have to appear here herself for the big shake-up. Here's hoping," she said.

Silvio Berlusconi has been beset

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been convicted and sentenced to a year in jail over an illegal wiretap.

He was accused of arranging for a police wiretap concerning a political rival to be leaked and published in a newspaper run by his brother.

Mr Berlusconi is likely to appeal and will remain free in the meantime.

He is presently appealing against another conviction and faces two more verdicts in the coming weeks.

One of the rulings expected later this month is about tax fraud, and the other trial concerns allegations the he paid for sex with an underage prostitute.

The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says there is no real prospect of Mr Berlusconi going to jail, but the conviction is another very serious blow to his reputation.

It comes weeks after his right-wing coalition did better than expected in a general election, and is expected to form a major bloc in the next parliament.

In October last year, Mr Berlusconi was convicted in another tax fraud case and sentenced to a year in jail.

That conviction is currently subject to an appeal.

Prosecutors brought the wiretap case after a transcript of a phone conversation intercepted by the authorities was published in the newspaper Il Giornale, owned by Mr Berlusconi's brother Paolo.

The conversation took place between the head of insurer Unipol and Piero Fassino, who was the leader of the biggest centre-left party and Mr Berlusconi's biggest political rival at the time.

Unipol was trying to take over BNL bank in 2005. Magistrates had ordered the wiretap as part of an investigation into inappropriate interference in the takeover.

The publication of the transcript in a national newspaper broke secrecy rules, and Mr Berlusconi was accused of obtaining the transcript from the wiretap company used by magistrates.

In numerous trials over the years, Mr Berlusconi has been accused of charges including accounting fraud, perjury, bribery, corruption, having unlawful sex with a minor, and fraud over the sale of film rights.

Mr Berlusconi says he is the target of a vendetta by politically biased prosecutors. He has denied all the accusations against him and has either been acquitted or let off under statutes of limitations.

Neelie Kroes on the similarities between the European Commission and the College of Cardinals.

An international college in a European capital is poised to make a decision that will have consequences for the whole world. It is taking place behind closed doors according to mysterious and incomprehensible rules.

No, it’s not the European Commission in Brussels. This time it’s the college of cardinals in Rome. The cardinals will not be voting on budgets, the euro crisis or legislation but on who will become the new pope.

 Obsolete

I think this opaque, male-dominated institution is completely obsolete. I realise that many people see the European Commission as a similarly obscure, power-crazed group of people, also dominated by men and operating according to rules that no one understands.

The people on the commission do understand the how and why of what they are doing and for them the importance of what they are doing is a given. To the cardinals the procedure is crystal clear but to the faithful on Saint Peter’s square it couldn’t be less so.

Granted, the Commission and the European Council of Ministers can move in mysterious ways as well. But as a former MP and minister, I know very well that the national policy-making process can be pretty obscure, too, and so widens the gap between government and citizens.

Twitter

Now the internet has made it so easy to access information, I find it incredible that such closed structures remain in place. The question is: how much longer? When will the first reality soap about the conclave hit the internet? The pope is on twitter already. Will the cardinals follow suit? ‘Is nothing sacred’, I hear people cry.

The church may profit from mysticism and mystery but the European Commission is much better off without it. Closed structures lead to distrust and distance and erode the public engagement we need so much.

The Commission, compared to other government bodies, is relatively transparent and accessible. But this doesn’t translate into a better understanding, perhaps because the institutional rules in the EU are too complex.

Consultation

It’s not the public consultation rounds that are to blame. Every Commission proposal is subject to several consultation rounds which, by the way, take up far too much time. But we are not reaching the right people and that is something that concerns my colleagues and myself. The decisions made in Brussels don’t just have to be explained and understood. People should also have the opportunity to have a say and express their support or criticism.

The social media make this possible. I receive questions, messages and opinions 24/7. This is no longer a nice fringe activity, it is an integral part of politics and governance. We are moving towards a culture in which transparency and accountability are the norm. That includes the European Commission.  It won’t happen overnight. We are not going to see the election of a new pope according to the number of followers on twitter any time soon but the social media will inevitably change even the administration of the church. Isn’t the twitter symbol a white dove? Amen.

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has begun a visit to Berlin amid German praise for his nation's steps toward democracy. A rights group says his government should do more to protect religious minorities.

President Yudhoyono was welcomed in Berlin with military honors by German President Joachim Gauck who said Indonesia had begun to exemplify the motto of "unity in diversity" since its overthrow of dictatorship 15 years ago.

The world's largest Muslim-majority nation could send "important signals" to Arab countries, Gauck said. Indonesia and Germany as economically significant G-20 nations bore special responsibility, including the need to safeguard natural resources, the president added.

On Tuesday evening, Yudhoyono and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are due to open Berlin's annual ITB international tourism industry convention. Indonesia is this year's partner nation at the ITB.

Merkel visited Indonesia in July last year and signed the "Jakarta Declaration" to broaden bilateral ties which include post-secondary education in Germany for Indonesian students. Germany provided aid after the 2004 Aceh earthquake and helped establish a tsunami early warning system inaugurated in 2011.

HRW criticizes treatment of minorities

Yudhoyono's arrival in Berlin was preceded by criticism of his government's handling of minorities by the New York-based group Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Last Thursday, HRW issued a 107-page report which accused Yudhoyono's nominally secular government of responding "weakly to growing intolerance" by Islamist extremists against minorities in Indonesia - contrary to the southeast Asian nation's image as being a promoter of moderate Islam.

The majority of Indonesia's 240 million people are Sunni. The HRW report cited harassment of Shia Muslims, the Islamic sect Ahmadiyah, Buddhists and Christians.

"Religious intolerance and related violence is rising in Indonesia, " said HRW Asia Deputy Director Phelim Kine.

He said Yudhoyono's administration should adopt "a zero tolerance approach, to prosecute the perpetrator, assist the victim and make clear that the government won't accept this type of abuse," Kine said.

Yudhoyono's government replied by saying that religious harmony remained strong in Indonesia and that it was unfair to generalize. The Religious Affairs Ministry said some disputes over the closure or building of places of worship were instead motivated by social, economic and even family issues.

Trading partners

German-Indonesian trade, which dipped in 2009 during the world economic crisis has resurged in recent years to be worth nearly seven billion euros ($9.1 billion). After China and Japan, the EU ranks as Indonesia's third largest trading partner.

Ahead of elections due in 2014, Yuhyohono's ruling Democratic Party has been undermined by a series of corruption allegations. The president, who was re-elected in 2009 to a second term, is barred from running for a third term and no obvious successor candidate has emerged.

Last month, Anas Urbaningrum quit his post as party chairman after being named by an anti-graft body as a suspect in a scandal over the construction of a sports stadium near Jakarta.

On Sunday (03.03.2013), the majority of Swiss voted to cap bonuses paid to bankers in a national referendum - two days after the EU chose to limit bonuses paid to bankers from 2014. But will that help?

Greedy, selfish bankers - that's the image that has been engrained in the minds of many since the beginning of the financial crisis. One of the responses from students at Harvard Business School was to create the MBA Oath, which allows students and graduates to pledge to "create value responsibly and ethically." But this is probably easier said than done.

In fact, it's not only society that a banker has to serve, said Würzburg-based economist Ekkehard Wenger. Bankers are not only focused on ensuring their livelihoods,they also have to make sure that the customer isn't cheated and that the bank makes profits, he added. The banker has to please many parties.

Bankers as allrounders

So what is a "good" banker? One who is honest, adheres to the law and loyal to his business is a good banker, according to business ethicist Christoph Lütge. A "good" banker would not only work speedily on behalf of the customer, he would also keep an eye on sustainability - and he is supposed to do all of that as transparently as possible. Large bonuses are justified "if one gives the right incentives and says, 'yes, give out high bonuses, but only when you do your business sustainably,'" Lütge said.

But sustainability, in particular, was not rewarded for a long time, according to economist Wenger. "People were paid for things that briefly appeared successful but turned out to be a nonstarters in the end," he said.

Lured by the model

By the 1980s, at the latest, bankers relied more on machines, according to business historian Werner Abelshauer.

"Scientists had developed models that could supposedly eliminate risks to a large extent. It's no longer the banker who creates trust, it's the algorithm, the technology," he said, while adding that at that point certain tendencies for criminal activities entered the banking world.

Morals and money - how can they go together?

The algorithms that appeared infallible to many bankers were simply too tempting. "The system bears the risk for the human side of this business to disappear," business ethicist Lütge warns. Every human being needs a clear set of rules, otherwise he would be quickly overwhelmed, he adds. As a result, Lütge doubts the merits of Harvard Business School's ethics oath. After all, one person alone can't change the banking system.

Coming up with new rules

However, many banks have come to realise that a system of short-term bonuses doesn't help during the course of the current economic crisis. So they have switched to bonuses based on medium or long-term achievements.

Putting maximum caps on bonuses, valid across the EU is yet another step. From 2014, extra payments will not be able to exceed fixed annual salaries - only in exceptional cases will it be possible to double the amount. This is intended to make banks and the whole industry less prone to risks.

The effects of the EU's restrictions on banking bonuses remain to be seen - only time will tell whether bankers will be driven more by morals than the quest for profits. As an ethicist, Lütge advises young bankers to take on a broader perspective and to possibly look into philosophy or other social sciences.

But economist Wenger is more pragmatic. "There is no point asking from a banker to be a better man than, say, politician who takes his voters for fools. After all, we don't have such high expectations from that [a politician] either," he said.

The defence secretary, Philip Hammond, has warned that he will resist further cuts to the armed forces in George Osborne's forthcoming spending review.

He told the Daily Telegraph that other Tory cabinet ministers believed the greatest burden of any cuts should fall on the welfare budget.

There was, he said, a "body of opinion within cabinet who believes that we have to look at the welfare budget again" and "we should be seeing welfare spending falling" as a result of rising employment levels. He said a 0.5% saving from the benefit bill would be enough to protect the armed forces.

Hammond said the "first priority" for the government should be "defending the country and maintaining law and order" and that further defence cuts were not possible while meeting stated security objectives.

"I shall go into the spending review fighting the case for the defence budget on the basis that we have made very large cuts to defence, we've done that with the collaboration and co-operation of the military," he said.

"Any further reduction in the defence budget would fall on the level of activity that we were able to carry out – the idea that expensively bought equipment may not be able to be used, expensively employed troops may not be able to be exercised and trained as regularly as they need to be.

" I am not going into the spending review offering any further reductions in personnel."

On a visit to Libya at the end of January, David Cameron rowed back on suggestions that he would allow defence spending to rise in real terms from 2015-16. Downing Street had initially briefed that Cameron stood by comments he made in 2010 that there should be "year-on-year real terms growth in the defence budget in the years beyond 2015". Later, his officials said the reference to 2015 meant the rises could not start until the year after 2015-16.

George Osborne is trying to secure a coalition agreement on departmental spending cuts for 2015-16, even though it follows the election because Whitehall needs to plan for spending rises well in advance.

A commitment to allow defence spending to rise in 2015-16 would mean the armed forces could enjoy protection from the cuts, along with schools, hospitals and the aid budget, but this puts pressure on the remaining spending departments.

Hammond's interview was the first public expression of the frustration he has been privately expressing in cabinet about the pressures on the Ministry of Defence budget.

In private, the defence secretary is said to have told government colleagues that the military cannot absorb further big cuts without them having a significant impact on the effectiveness of the armed forces - and a further crippling affect on morale.

Like his predecessor Liam Fox, he has also raised questions over the increase in money for the department for international development (Dfid) - a source of huge resentment within the MoD's Main Building in Whitehall.

The heads of the three armed services have also warned that they cannot meet the demands required of them if the budget keeps shrinking.

For instance, the head of the army, General Sir Peter Wall, agreed to a restructuring programme last year, and thousands of further job losses - but on the understanding the service would not have to absorb more cuts.

Yet in last year's autumn statement, the MoD wasn't spared further reductions, and now has to find a further £735m worth of savings over the next two years.

The last one is the best. For thousands of years on this planet, Human Beings have warred with each other. If you take a look at the reasons they warred with each other, you will quickly see there aren't any good ones - land, resources, greed. Those are not reasons. That is a description of old energy. Those are not reasons. Reasons would be perhaps defense against an aggressor. But what if there is no longer the consciousness of the aggressor?

When I appeared in my partner's life more than 20 years ago, I said to him privately that the first messages we're going to give will be unbelievable. There would be laughter. We told him that Human nature and consciousness itself would change, and that the seeds of peace would be planted and there would come a time where there is no more war. Indeed, the laughter was great because humans look at history and they see patterns based on an absolute energy called Human Nature. "Impossible! There always has to be war. There always has been. Therefore, there always will be." This is you, in a box, in a black and white potential, where you can only see the black and white of what is and the black and white of what has been. You have no idea the shades of color that are there in your consciousness and the beauty of the love of God

North Korea is on the edge of change, as we told you it might be. What did this require? The death of the old energy, and I want you to watch this take place. The advisors of the young leader are going to do their best to pull him back into an old energy. This free choice of his will be far different than his father, for he sees some color. Watch for these things. They'll take longer than you want, but it is the beginning of the beginning.….”

”.. Lay Down Your Arms

SB: Thank you, Lord. I am going to be asking you about the who, why, what, where, when, how of Ascension, about December 21st. But before I do that there is one question that I have to ask you because I know our listeners and readers want me to. I think they would like to know something about the Newtown tragedy. Was it mind control? Was it the cabal trying to take attention away from Ascension? Was it simply a deranged individual?

Why was it permitted to happen, Lord? It shocked a lot of people.

AAM: It was a tragedy in Newtown, and it was a sacrifice of innocents, both children and adults. And yes, there is divine purpose that comes out of this. Was it a planned action on our part? Absolutely not, that is not the way we operate. It was the action, yes, of a very deranged, ill, dis-eased individual. It was not the act of the cabal. They are in far too deep containment to ever effect such a strike.

Let us talk about the meaning. And the Mother has talked about this also. It is time for all of humanity, east, west, north, south, to come together as one community. And this atrocity, this killing of children needlessly, brings to the forefront what is taking place on your planet.

The beings of Newtown, Connecticut, and this emotional energy, have acted and do act as a surrogate and a catalyst for the human race to come together and say, “No more,” that the slaughter of innocents is not acceptable in any realm.

And what that means, dear ones, is it is not acceptable through missile or drone strikes, in neighborhoods, in marketplaces and schools, or anywhere else. It is not acceptable for children to be hit by stray bullets, by gang wars or by drug lords, in any country, in any nation, in any civilization. It is not acceptable for children to die of disease, poverty, hunger, and starvation.

So these bright angels, this soul group has sacrificed and acted as a surrogate. Now, I wish to tell you that all of these angels were well out of their body and already in the arms of the Mother prior to their death. She had already gathered them up.

So it is not just for them that you weep. It is for each other. Because what you are seeing, what you are witnessing, is the pain and suffering that violence does to humanity, to families, to friends, to siblings, to parents, to communities, to neighbors, to nations. And it is all of you saying, “No more!”

SB: If I may intervene, what do you say to people who advocate the right to bear arms in America? What does one say to organizations that think that they’ll fall under somebody else’s rule if they give up their rifles?

AAM: Let me say this, and I do not simply say it to Americans, I say it to all nations that carry weapons to destroy families and friends. I say it to all beings that carry guns or weapons. And I am talking about missiles or chemical weapons.

When you live in fear, then what you create is fear. When you live in harmony and community and unity, that is what you create. Understand, the opening of 11/11 and 12/12 was not simply some esoteric exercise. You have been unified.

And as I have asked you, and as most of you are doing, that grid is to grow and inflame and ignite more and more every single hour, every single minute of every day. It was not just an hour-long exercise or a day-long exercise.

How can you live in unity and love and carry weapons, guns, ready to kill someone you don’t like or you don’t care about? And it is particularly dangerous when you have those weapons available to those who are unbalanced.

And we suggest to you that there is no way to safeguard against someone who is in the throes of a psychotic episode. There is no way to prevent them from getting a weapon if in fact they are available. That is a fool’s belief.

So if you expect harm to come to you, then harm will come to you. It is a time of change, and you cannot build Nova Earth with guns, missiles, and chemical weapons. You cannot do it. It is not possible. Not in any universe, not in any realm.

I had thought, this day, that I would come before you with my blue flame of truth. And I would say to you, “I am laying down my sword and shield,” because that is my desire and creation, and that it would be symbolic for you to understand that these are no longer necessary.

I did not begin today by saying that because I am still using my sword to cut some cords of illusion with some of you, and some of you are feeling exceptionally vulnerable right now. And so I want you to know that I’m also shielding you.

But my sword is also the scepter of truth. It is the staff of wisdom. It is the staff that you can lean upon when you are exhausted. Your guns do not serve that purpose.

Lay down your arms. This I ask of you. And more importantly, lay down your fear.

SB: Thank you, Lord. I don’t mean to single out Americans. I’m more referring to the Constitution and the provision that the right to bear arms shall not be interfered with. But thank you. You anticipated my questions on Newtown, so I’ve had all my questions answered.
