Dutch
participation in a summit of the leaders of the 17 top euro countries would
only be useful if a good outcome is certain. This was the response of Prime
Minister Mark Rutte when asked Thursday about the possibility of such a
meeting.

“We must
not organise a summit unless we’re sure to come to good conclusions,” Rutte
told journalists after meeting in Brussels with NATO chief Anders Fogh
Rasmuseen. Rutte also said he had not been approached for such a meeting.
Regarding
the Greek financial crisis, Rutte says haste is not necessary because the
country has enough money to meet its obligations until mid-September. He also
regards the panic over Italy’s finances unwarranted because the Italian
government has already initiated action.
In the next
few months, further discussions will be held over financial involvement in
Greece. Germany and the Netherlands want to extend their loans to the country
as part of a new rescue plan offering about 85 billion euros in funds.
According
to Rutte, more should be done to establish a permanent solution for Greece.
“That takes time,” he said. “If it could happen quickly, you could quickly have
a summit.”
